Polymer/liquid-crystal composite display illuminated by guided light

Abstract

A polymer/liquid crystal composite display that utilizes release of guided light was fabricated. It has 72 x 72 pixels, whose pitch is 1.27 mm. It composed of a light guide and the composite layer sandwiched between a glass substrate with an ITO electrode and a ceramic board with Al electrodes. The electrodes were driven by the electronic circuits mounted on the rear side of the board via through-holes and all wires were eliminated from edges of the board. So, the board can be tiled without clearance and this display can be extended to large-area applications.
