Abstract
Oligomeric liquid crystalline compounds are expected to show interesting properties, because such compounds have an intermediate molecular weight between polymeric liquid crystalline compounds and monomeric ones. The oligomeric compound, 2, 2', 3, 3'-tetra- [ω- (cianobiphenyloxy) hexanoyloxy] dipropylether (abbreviated hereafter to TCAD-5) was synthesized in our laboratory, which has a digrycerol unit as the main chain. Thermal and dynamic viscoelastic properties have been studied. It will be expected that the compound will show an electrorheological (ER) effect because of an existence of ciano groups at the end of the substituents.
