2B03 Lamellar Columnar Phase Induced by Rodlike 1, 3-Diazaazulene Derivatives

Abstract

Rodlike molecules with a 1, 3-diazaazulene skeleton were synthesized. Some homologues showed a smectic mesophase with a quite unusual X-ray diffraction pattern, which closely related to lamellar columnar phases induced by disklike and boardlike molecules. This is the first example that simple, rodlike molecules showed lamellar columnar phases.
