Abstract
We have synthesized a series of novel liquid crystalline (LC) crown ether type axially chiral binaphthyl derivatives with LC substituent, where phenylcyclohexyl moiety was adopted as a mesogenic core. They were designed to develop a novel LC reaction field available for anisotropic and asymmetric organic synthesis and polymerization. We found that the novel crown ether type binaphthyl derivatives exhibit enantiotropic LC phase and also induce chiral nematic (N^*) phase when dissolved in a mixture of two nematic LCs, and that acetylene polymerization under the N^*-LC field gives helical polyacetylene.
