Abstract
In order to test the possibility of reducing power consumption, we numerically analyzed the relationship between the electro-optical properties and the birefringence dispersion of liquid crystal Δn__<LC>(λ) in a single-polarizer reflective MDTN-LCD and an MFDTN-LCD operating at low on-voltage. We found that the LCDs exhibited a NW-mode and/or NB-mode achromatic image of high luminous reflectance and high contrast ratio independent of Δn__<LC>(λ), even when the on-voltage of the TFT-LCD was reduced to 2V, if we optimized the birefringence dispersion of the retardation film Δn__<R>(λ). The power consumption of the panel can be decreased to 1/2 to 1/3 of that presently used for reflective TFT-LCDs operating at 3.2V in the on-state, while maintaining a high-quality image.
