1B19 The Layer Structure of Smectic C Phase for Liquid Crystalline Compounds with a Long Alkyl Chain at the Lateral Position

Abstract

This paper describes the thermal properties and the layer structures of a chiral smectic C^* (SmC^*) phase for liquid crystals with a long alkyl group at the lateral position. The layer spacings of SmC^* phase were determined by an X-ray diffraction and compared with the molecular length calculated by a semi-empirical molecular orbital method. On the basis of these results, the molecular arrangement in SmC^* phase will be discussed.
