Abstract
The three aromatic molecules with permanent dipoles are used to investigate effects of molecular dipole, quadrupole, and polarizability interactions on the average orientational order of solutes in nematic liquid crystals with difference dielectric anisotropy. The orientaional ordering of solutes was analyzed using mean-field models. The short-range repulsive force accounts for most of the ordering of solutes in liquid crystal solvents having positive dielectric anisotropy. Effects of long-range interaction could not be specified in the solvents. However, molecular dipole plays an important role with respect to orientating mechanism in the liquid crystal solvents with negative dielectric anisotropy.
