Abstract
Liquid crystal(LC) display should possess the solid anchoring surface except for the free standing films, because it is necessary not only for the mechanism of the display device, but also the holding the fluid LC materials. Here, we invented the novel principle for LC display. Both axis and threshold less in-plane switching mode with memory in any direction can be realized by introducing the spontaneous complete wetting liquid-LC interface on the glass substrate of the cell. The complete wetting interface has been achieved by the suitable modeling of the phase separated LC mixture, such as polymer-LC mixture, with special types of the amphiphiles to activate the interface of liquid-LC. Both LC and solvent molecules can diffuse across the liquid-LC interface, because there is only difference in the concentration and the order parameter. Thus, these surfaces have intrinsically unique physical nature in comparison with the solid surfaces, such as spontaneous complete flatness in molecular scale or free fluctuation motion in the vicinity of the interface.
