In FLC cells fabricated using same alignment films in which the rubbing directions were set anti-parallel, zigzag defects always appear because the energies of two types of chevron structures are equivalent. In this report, we formulate a new idea for fabricating zigzag defect-free FLC cells to which the energy difference is given by adopting a combination of two alignment films which have different surface anchoring energies.
