Abstract
A crosslinkable polymer surface is modified by the irradiation of Ar plasma and alignment properties of nematic liquid crystal (LC) on the surface are investigated. When the surface without the plasma modification is rubbed, the LC aligns at right angle to the rubbing direction. On the other hand, the direction of LC alignment becomes parallel to the rubbing direction if the modified surface is rubbed. Furthermore, the LC alignment changes to be perpendicular to the substrate, and finally the LC alignment becomes parallel to the rubbing direction after the long time of plasma exposure.
