Abstract
We synthesized novel liquid crystalline ureas. Most of the compounds exhibited two types of columnar liquid crystalline phases. In both types of the columnar phases all of the liquid crystalline compounds showed a broad peak at 9.3-9.6 nm in X-ray diffraction. They corresponded to twice of the repeat distance in one-directional packing structure of ureas. In IR spectroscopy the hydrogen bonding between the ureas was observed as a shift of the N-H stretching vibration. From these results it was assumed that the columns have the crossed molecular arrangement.
