Abstract
Octahomotetraoxacalix[4]arenes bearing carboxyl groups on their upper rim and long alkoxy chains on their lower rim were prepared. These compounds showed liquid crystal phases when alkylidenediamines were added. They were assembled via ionic bonds to form capsules and exhibited smectic liquid crystal phases. Further as these mixtures were heated, alkylidenediamines were vaporized out around their boiling points, yet smectic phases were still kept. According to powder X-ray diffraction analysis, the peaks corresponding to shorter layer distances were observed after their evaporation. The chain lengths of alkylidenediamines were crucial to form liquid crystal phases.
