Mesomorphic Propertics of Thiadiazole-ring Condensed Terphenyl-type Fluorescent Dyes

Abstract

Rod like 1,2,5-thiadiazole ring condensed terphenyl derivatives 1-3 with a cyano and a long alkoxy group were synthesized. All compounds exhibited strong fluorescence and liquid crystalline phases. Strong fluorescence was observed in crystalline state, mesophase and isotropic phase of all compounds. It was found that the emission wavelength and the phase transition behaviors of 1-3 were affected by the position of the condensed 1,2,5-thiadiazole ring in the terphenyl skeleton.
