Abstract
The optimum azimuthal angles of the transmissive axes of polarizer and analyzer to obtain the maximum contrast ratio are theoretically investigated for a Bi-Nem type LC cell. The results from this theoretical investigation are compared with the experimental results. Based on the liquid crystal continuum theory, the director profiles are theoretically calculated for the U state and the T state, taking into account the anchoring effect on each substrate surface. Jones matrix method has been used to calculate the transmittance for the U and T state of the Bi-Nem cell. The calculated results are compared with the experimental results.
