Abstract
Time responses of a nematic liquid crystal director orientation change are measured by using acoustic or optical method. The responses with an applied voltage are in the order of milliseconds in both methods, while the responses with the voltage removal are quite different. The response with the voltage removal measured by acoustic wave is about a thousand times faster than that measured by light. The explanation is that the acoustic method can measure the director orientation only in the vicinity of the glass/liquid-crystal interface.
