Abstract
A nonionic liquid crystal and its ionized family were synthesized. Their thermal and liquid crystalline properties were examined by the polarizing microscopic observation, DSC, and X-ray diffraction measurements. Moreover, binary systems composed of the nonionic and ionic liquid crystals were prepared. The nonionic liquid crystal exhibited a smectic A phase. The ionic family also formed the smectic A phase. The smectic-isotropic phase transition temperature of the ionic family was higher than that of the nonionic family. The liquid crystalline binary systems composed of the nonionic and ionic families showed an induced nematic phase.
