Abstract
We report the synthesis and behaviors of achiral rodlike molecules possessing a bipenyl core at the center of molecule. The biphenyl part generates a twist conformation. We expected that a helical super structure was constructed by aggregation of the molecules with one chirality. Compound 3 exhibited enantiotropic nematic(N) and smectic C phases. Furthermore, formation of defect-lines was observed in the SmC phase. This suggested that a helical super structure was built spontaneously in the SmC phase.
