Abstract
We synthesized single- or double-tail anionic surfactants having mesogen groups as a hydrophobic part, and studied their liquid crystal behavior as functions of temperature and solvent concentration. The surfactants with a cyanobiphenyl group formed a columnar or lamella liquid crystal under presence of water. Interestingly, the double-tail type of those surfactants showed myelin figures in water, that is, a tubular lamella liquid crystal having double helix.
