Generation of blue phases by using a cholesterol derivative and ester compounds

Abstract

A cholesterol derivative with a pentafluorobenzoyl unit was synthesized, and it was found that the mixtures with rodlike ester compounds and this chiral compound exhibited blue phase. We investigated the effect of perfluorophenyl-phenyl interaction in stabilization of the blue phase by doping ester compounds. We investigated their liquid-crystallinities by polarized optical microscopy (POM).
