Abstract
Addition of paraffin was applied to nTCB, which has smectic E (SmE or crystal E, CrE) phase as a mesophase. SmE phase has a structure more ordered than other liquid crystal phases. DSC, small-angle X-ray diffraction (SAXD) and polarizing microscopy were applied for nTCB-paraffin binary systems. A phase diagram of the 9TCB-nonane was obtained from the DSC results. Their miscibility was verified by polarizing microscopy. From SAXD measurements, Debye-ring of binary SmE phase was obtained. The layer spacing of the binary SmE phase was larger than that of neat 9TCB. Those results suggest that the SmE phase is swollen by nonane.
