Abstract
Liquid crystalline perylene tetracarboxylic bisimide derivative 1 bearing four disiloxane chains was synthesized. Compound 1 exhibits a hexagonal ordered columnar phase at room temperature. In the columnar phase, disiloxane chains interdigitate to stabilize the columnar structure. In the columns, molecules are closely stacked. The time-of-flight measurement reveals a high electron mobility exceeding 0.1 cm2/Vs in the columnar phase at room temperature. Compound 1 is soluble in various organic solvents and LC thin films can be produced by a spin-coating method. In particular, uniaxially aligned LC thin films can be formed on friction-transferred substrates.
