PA15 Pyridyl imidazolium salts as a versatile hydrogen bond acceptor for supramoleculary assembled ionic liquid crystal

Abstract

Ionic liquids 1 possessing imidazolium and pyridine moieties were synthesized. These two moieties could act as an ionic core and a hydrogen bonding acceptor, respectively. Carboxylic acids 2-7 were used as hydrogen bonding donors. The complexes with these carboxylic acids showed a various liquid crystalline phase behaviors. Characterizations of the phases were investigated with polarizing optical microscopy (POM) and powder X-ray diffraction.
