Abstract
Liquid-crystalline anthracene derivatives having mesogenic moieties consisting of the polar tetra(ethylene oxide) moiety and the nonpolar p-(4-trans-pentylcyclohexyl) moiety were designed and synthesized. These compounds show the smectic phases and they can form two different layer structures. In particular, anthracene derivatives 1 and 2 show the two different luminescent properties based on the changes of their layer structures. Uniaxial alignment of the anthracene derivatives can be achieved by using the rubbed polyimide thin film. The liquid-crystalline properties and the anisotropic properties of these compounds were examined.
