Recently, a photo-alignment (PA) method attracts people's interest due to its noncontact and dust-free natures. The weak anchoring energy in a photo-aligned LCDs, however, impedes the application of the PA method to LCD production. In this report, we focus our attention to develop a PA method for IPS-LCDs, in which we use a newly developed photo-alignment material showing liquid crystallinity and photo-sensitive properties. The results show that the strong anchoring is obtained at low UV exposure, but weak at high exposure. On the other hand, the voltage holding properties are better in a high UV exposure sample than low exposure one. From these results, we propose a new double exposure method that will achieve the high anchoring and voltage holding properties simultaneously.
