A novel bent-core compound 1,3-bis(4-n-alkoxyphenyl)urea (BAPU-n, where n is the number of carbon atoms in the alkyl chain) and a bent-core compound 2,5-bis(4-(nonyloxy)phenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (BNPO-9) were synthesized. The mesophases of BAPU-n were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarizing optical microscopy (POM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Additionally, these bent-core compounds were added to 1,2-bis(4'-n-alkoxybenzoyl)hydrazines (BABH-n) to modify the stability of cubic phase derived from BABH-n. The characterization by DSC, POM and XRD showed that BAPU-n is not compatible with BABH-n. On the other hand, it was found that the addition of BNPO-9 to BABH-9 reduces stability of the cubic phase.
