Abstract

We propose a simple radial alignment method for LCs in the VA cells by the synergetic effect of a magnetic flux distribution of the commercial permanent magnet and an applied electric field. If the LC directors on the surfaces in the cell are fixed with a UV-curable liquid crystalline polymer by irradiating the UV light, the radial-shaped orientation can be reproduced by applying only the electric field without the magnetic field. The radial LC orientation may be applied to LC lenses etc.
