Abstract

We previously reported oligothiophene-based catenar liquid crystals showing the mechanoflurochromic properties. The luminescent color change induced by mechanical stress was achieved at ambient temperature. In the present study, we synthesized a benzodithiophene analogue Am-1. Compound Am-1 exhibited several thermodynamically stable mesophases and emitted light green and yellow fluorescence depending on the mesophases. The application of mechanical force onto the thin film at ambient temperature induced the structural change, resulting in the luminescent color change from yellow to sky-blue. The shear-induced color image was retained for a long time. In contrast, the initial yellow luminescent color was immediately recovered by annealing the smeared liquid-crystalline film at 150 °C.
