N, N'-dialkyl-4,4'-bipyridinium salts (viologens) are expected to be applied to responsive materials. In this study, extended viologen compounds with various counter anions were synthesized, and their liquid crystal (LC) characteristics were investigated. The extended viologen compound with nitrate ions (12(PhV)12NO3) showed LC phase at 180 ℃ to 100 ℃ at cooling. Moreover, a texture unique to smectic A phase was observed by polarizing optical microscope in the viologen compound with trifluoromethanesulfonate ions (12(PhV)12CF3SO3). The comparison of 12(PhV)12CF3SO3 and 12(PhV)12CH3SO3, which the viologen compound having methanesulfonate ions (CH3SO3-), suggested that fluorine atoms in counter anions promoted the formation of LC phase.
