Extremely thick liquid crystal (LC) cells with a thickness of ~1 mm is required for applications of terahertz phase shifters. In such LC cells, the use of nematic LCs exhibiting dynamics that the decay response time is proportional to the square of the thickness is not suitable for practical use. In this presentation, we introduce two methods to solve the problem of the response time: one is to employ the strucure of polymer dispersed liquid crystals, and the other is the use of thickness-independent dynamics in cholesteric LCs.
