Abstract

Bicontinuous cubic (Cub) phase has three-dimensional network structure. Formation of the Cub phase is controlled by molecule structure, but until today design for the molecules has not been established. For that reason, we have been investigated effects of the lateral substituent introduced in molecular core structure on the phase behavior in 1,2-bis(4’-n-alkoxyaryloyl)hydrazines. As a result, the compound we synthesized formed a Cub phase and an interesting phase transition behavior. We discuss the molecular aggregation structure and the mechanism of the cubic phase formation exhibited on the basis of the electron density analyses.
