Abstract

We propose a liquid crystal (LC) microlens array (MLA) with two-divided and square electrodes and a lens aperture of 30 m for light-deflection and focusing functions. Three-dimensional (3D) numerical calculations of the molecular orientation of the LC director in the LC-MLA were carried out, and the distributions and phase retardation of the LC directors were simultaneously estimated, when the voltages at different phase differences between two-divided electrodes are applied. The phase retardation arising from interference fringes was also obtained experimentally. The optical phase retardation measured experimentally agreed well with that calculated numerically.
