Liquid Crystalline Organic Ferroelectrics Using Dynamics of Alkylamide Chains

Abstract

Alkylamide chains are interesting structural units in which dipole moments and conformational degrees of freedom coexist. One-dimensional chains with intermolecular N−H•••O=　hydrogen bonds can realize a polarization inversion by applying an external electric field in liquid crystals, and a hysteresis appears in the electric field-polarization curve. The combination of the alkylamide chain with the functional π-electron skeleton enables the creation of a wide variety of multifunctional materials.
