Abstract

Mixtures of cyanobiphenyl compounds (nCB) and EBBA are known to exhibit highly ordered smetic phases, resulting from the charge transfer interaction. In this study, we examined the relative amount of transferred charges from EBBA to nCB by IR spectroscopy and compared them to the in-plane lattice constant in the induced SmB phase. The spectroscopy showed that the transferred charges considerably increased at the transition point from the nematic to SmB, followed by the moderate increase with the further decrease of temperature until the saturation at a certain point. On the other hand, the in-plane lattice constant of the induced SmB phase monotonically decreased with a decreasing temperature.
