Effects of branched side-chains on Liquid Crystallinity and Luminescence Behavior in Trinuclear Gold Complexes

Abstract

Summary: Trinuclear gold (I) complexes (Figure 1) exhibit intense luminescence in crystals. Depending on the length of alkyl side-chain on the pyrazole ligands, the complexes showed different color of the luminescence and different liquid crystallinity. In this study, we discussed the relationship between their structure and photophysical/thermal properties. The melting points of complexes were lowered by introduction of branched side-chains, e.g., the complex with the longest branch, DTE6-Hex, showed the melting point at -15 °C and discotic nematic liquid-crystalline phase (ND) in extremely wide temperature range. (Figure 3) The gold complexes were found to exhibit strong phosphorescence at room temperature (Figure 4).
