Slanted Lattice Arrangement of Blue Phase II on a One-Dimensional Patterned Surface

Abstract

Orientation analysis in LC devices is important to understand and control the behavior of light propagating in the device. We have fabricated a BPII deflector using a one-dimensional alignment pattern and analyzed its lattice arrangement. Optical analysis and TEM observations demonstrated that the lattice arrangement in the deflector is slanted with respect to the substrate. Furthermore, we calculated the similarity between the surface pattern and the interfacial director orientation and found that the experimentally observed slant structure is consistent with the theoretically stable structure.
