Abstract

Flexoelectric polarization, which was caused by symmetry breaking in a distortion of material, was investigated in liquid crystalline elastomers composed of wedge-shaped mesogens prepared in cross-linking under horseshoe-shaped deformation or under uniaxial deformation with splay distortion. In the case of the elastomers prepared under horseshoe-shaped deformation, X-ray diffractometry suggested that splay distortion along the depth direction was induced in the pseudo-isotropic phase. While almost no electric charge was observed in the smectic A phase, the electric charge caused by polarization due to the flexoelectric effect appeared and reached -1367 pC/mm2 in the pseudo-isotropic phase.
