The synthesis of butterfly-like ligands with multiple cyanobiphenyls at the terminal position

Abstract

We have synthesized a butterfly-like molecule (L1) with multiple cyanobiphenyl groups at the ends of the molecule as a ligand for metal complex liquid crystals, and DSC and POM observations revealed two intermediate phases in the range from 30°C to 110°C for L1. Furthermore, reduction of the Schiff base moiety in L1 revealed two liquid crystalline phases. In the presentation, we will report on these two liquid crystalline phases and also on the formation of metal complexes using this ligand.
