Abstract
First we studied the alignment direction of FLC molecules in a mesogenic side chain polymer stabilized SSFLC cell that was photocured at a SmA phase temperature, and we found that there are two directions: the one is the direction determined by surface stabilization, the other is that of mesogenic side chain. Then, we tried to coincide these two directions with the aim of improving contrast ratio by photocure particularly at a temperature where FLC medium is in the SmC* phase under the application of a monopolar electric field. In fact, we succeeded in fabricating a new PS-SSFLC display that exhibits monostable electrooptical characteristics with a high contrast ratio owing to defect free, a grayscale capability without threshold, and a fast response.
