We performed proteome analysis using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis for the purpose of acquiring new diagnostic markers for lung cancer. By devising samples for two-dimensional gel electrophoresis, useful marker candidate proteins are easily detected. In this paper, we will describe three studies. The first is the search for markers to distinguish between small cell lung carcinoma and large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the lung. The second is a comparison between cells cultured under different conditions to acquire proteins related to cancer invasion. The third is a comparison using cancer stem cell-like cells and the parent cells to acquire cancer stem cell related proteins. We succeeded in efficiently detecting proteins suitable for the purpose by devising samples. Thus, the use of two-dimensional gel electrophoresis is still important in research to discover novel useful markers for diagnosis and prognosis.
