Abstract
This paper aims to study the so-called pied piping phenomenon in English wh-questions in terms of the notion of“extended projections” proposed by Grimshaw (1991). The main proposal of this paper is that wh-words, with the unspecified [±WH] feature, have to be identified as [+WH], and that the [+WH] feature percolation is implemented downward from [+WH] C0 to a wh-phrase through the extended projections. This account offers an explanation to a wide range of data including the “clausal”pied piping, which has been ignored in the literature.
