The total cross track error is key to RNAV in achieving its operational objectives.
In general, the total cross track error of RNAV is defined as the combination of navigation system error and pilotage error, by using Root Sum Square; RSS method.
However, the closed correlation of those errors is expected in rough RNAV course.
This paper discusses the correlation through modeling of the lateral flight control system characteristics of the aircraft. Analysis of data collected by YS-11 and L-1011 flight simulator shows the considerable reduction of the total cross track error in actual RNAV course by low pass filter characteristics of the flight control system.
