This paper describes a newly developed simple height finding radar system, namely the Navigation Accuracy Measurement System (NAMS), of which principle is based on the curve fitting method.
This radar system is designed for the data collection on height keeping errors of cruising aircraft flying overhead. NAMS consists of an antenna of which radiation pattern is a fan beam and a tranceiver which are similar to those of marine radars, a digitizer and a mini-computer. This is effective for height measurement of cruising aircraft whose speed and altitude are maintained while they traverse the fan beam.
In this paper, the system configuration, system characteristics and results of calibration tests using an aircraft are outlined. And a consideration on height measurement accuracy of NAMS by a computer simulation is made.
