A new antenna with improved elevation radiation pattern to reduce the influence of reflected wave by sea is developed. The antenna, named as Ring Plate Type Antenna, consists of a conventional VOR antenna and a conductive ring plate.
This report shows the way to calculate the radiation pattern of this antenna. The radiation patterns are calculated and compared with the experimental results by scale model antennas to confirm the validity of the calculation.
The influence of reflected wave on VOR signal is analyzed and compared with flight test data.
Simple evaluation method on the effect of the reflected wave is studied. The bearing error characteristics of the full size models are also measured.
The method reported here proved to be suitable for calculating the radiation pattern of the antenna.
Results also show that this antenna is less influenced by reflected waves than the conventional one and that the antenna does not bear intrinsic bearing error if it is set up so as not to generate unnecessary induction current.
