Abstract

To maintain the safety of air traffic, equipment for air navigation aids, such as NDB, VOR, DME, TACAN etc., have to operate at high availability. Therefore, for the sites at which maintenance personnel are not permanently stationed, they always monitor the status of these equipment at the maintenance center by a remote control system, and travel to sites for periodic maintenance and failure correction. But a limited number of remote monitoring parameters of the existing remote control system sometimes hinders a good understanding of the status of site equipment.

To improve the existing system, an advanced remote control system, namely, a remote maintenance monitoring system (RMMS), using a minicomputer is developed here. The RMMS will alert of an alarm by both a system panel and a CRT display describing where alarm has occurred, the type of alarm, and which part of equipment is alarming. It will also accomplish remotely great part of daily and weekly maintenance at the maintenance center currently performed at the remote equipment sites.

The main features of the RMMS are listed below.

1. Improvement of system availability.

2. Reduction of the workload of maintenance personnel.

3. Addition of high data processing capability.
