The Birth of ELSI: its prehistory and development

Abstract

A research program for studying ethical, legal, and social implications of science and technology research from mainly humanities and social science perspectives is called “ELSI.” This paper provides a historical overview of the emergence of these ideas and practices in the United States at the end of the last century and their subsequent development. This study will provide valuable suggestions about ELSI issues in the field of information technology.
