Abstract

Semantic communication, which focuses on conveying the meaning of information, has garnered significant attention as a novel communication paradigm. Recent advancements in artificial intelligence, particularly in deep learning and knowledge representation, have enabled effective methods for extracting, encoding, and transmitting the semantics relevant to a given task. These developments promise enhanced communication efficiency, reduced latency, and more intelligent interactions. The first part discusses the underlying theory, representative deep-learning-based approaches, and key application scenarios. In the latter part we focus specifically on semantic communication for image transmission, outlining the necessary functional components and corresponding implementation examples. In particular, we demonstrate that deep joint sourcechannel coding (DJSCC) offers an effective and promising approach for enabling semantic image transmission.
