Abstract
The influence of dye concentration on the analysis of free formaldehyde in leathers with low color fastness
was studied. The concentration of formaldehyde was measured applying Acetylacetone Color Method (JIS L 1041).
After the mixture solution of dye and formaldehyde was extracted with DEAE-column, acetylacetone was added to the
sample solution. Consequently, it was found that formaldehyde was not adsorbed by DEAE-column. When the
absorbance of the sample solution containing formaldehyde and larger amounts of dye was more than 1.0, the dye in the
sample was previously extracted with DEAE-column. The extraction makes it possible to analyze accurately the
formaldehyde in the sample. This method was useful to determine free formaldehyde in leathers with low color fastness without any interfering effects of larger amounts of dye, which are contained as a coexistent.
