Viscose (Cellulose 8%, Alkali 7%, NH4Cl value 11.4) are titrated with several salt solutions and the properties of their xanthogenate observed. Viscose is coagulated in a saturated Na2SO4 solution, but not by the titration of the 2 N-solu-tion and the xanthogenate is clear and hell brown jelly. The other salt solutions react as follows: The amount of salt to coagulate the viscose is equivalent, but the properties of their xanthd-genate jelly differ. 2. Xanthogenate of salt. Viscose film are coagulated in the several salt solutions and their compositions analyzed. Zn-, Al-, Ni-, Cu- sulphate do not form hlm and their colours are yellow, colourless, cuocolate and black respectively. Metallic salts produce their xantnogenate on the surface of the viscose film and do not react within the film. This is a very important property in making the serration of 'viscose silk. 3. Determination of spinning reaction. Viscose are spun under equal condinfons with first a bath of a spinning solution to determine and second a bath of Na-acetate solution to stop further acid reaction. The fiber on the bobbin are washed with cold water quickly and analyzed. Ex. 1. H2SO4, Na2SO4 and ZnSO4 bath H2SO4 is a quick reaction, H2SO4 reduced the reaction and ZnSO4 reduced it still further the combined amount of Zn is slightly increased with a further addition of ZnSO4. Ex. 2. MgSO4 bath MgSO4 is reduced the reaction and its strength is 1/5-1/6 of Zn-Sulphate's. Ex. 3. (NH4)2SO4 bath (NH4)2SO4 accelerated the reaction and easily combined, but was easily decomposed by acid. Ex. 4. Glucose bath Glucose reduced the reaction when a large amount was used. 4. Completion of spinning reaction. Fibrous cake of centrifugal spinning system is analyzed and the tensile strength of the fiber examined after standing in a desiccator saturated with moisutre. Therefore the spinning reaction to gain good fiber is completed after two or more hours. 5. Illustration of formation of the serration. Generally the spinning bath consists of acid, additional salts and organic, substances, in which the first is usually indispensable and the third is often unnecessary. The acid neutralizes the alkalinity of viscose, decomposes impurities (thiocarbunate, carbonate, sulphide) and further reacts to regenerate cellulose from cellulose xanthogenate. The salts separate cellulose xanthogenate by salting out and produce metalic cellulose xantho-genate replacing Na-radical to some extent. The additional substances reduce or equalize the reactions of acid and salts. These reactions occur in complex during spinning. Viscose which is flowed into a bath from a nozzle contacts with the bath, then neutralization, salting out and replacement of radical take place. Cellulose. xanthogenate fiber having metellie xanthogenate are decomposed to form a cellulosic covering film, the acid reacts through the film and the body shrinks to form the serration. 1. Acid. -produces covering film and holds a roundish form. 2. Salts-holds a roundish form by salting out. 3. Metallic salts-metalic cellulose xanthogenate, which produces only the surface of the viscose, are more stable than Na-Salt and become a projectional portion after tla. regeneration.
