Abstract
Cotton yarns were acetylated with acetic anhydride using sulfoacetic acid catalyst and benzene diluent. When they are acetylated under no tension they shrink and the shrinkage increases with increasing degree of acetylation. The highest shrinkage is about 20%. Homogeneity of dyeing properties is sufficient. When acetylation is carried out under appropriate conditions no serious loss of the ordinary and knot strength of yarns is to be observed. The chloroform solubility and the hygroscopicity of the acetylated yarns are less than that of yarns which are obtained by the vapor phase acetylation. It seems, that in the case of the liquid phase acetylation the amorphous parts are more preferably acetylated than in the latter case.
