Abstract
A waste pellet monitoring system incorporating a mechanical belt feeder, a waste-pellet sensor and a data logging facility was developed to record cumulative number of waste pellets over time. Feed intake was obtained by subtracting the number of waste pellets detected from the number of pellets presented over the same period using an ad libitum regime. The system was validated by identifying feeding rhythms in tank-reared greenback flounder. It was shown that the system possessed three significant features: continuous feed particle monitoring, actual feed intake determination and minimal disturbance to fish.
